How Much Should I Pay?

Tattoo pricing has always been subjective. Every artist has his or her own idea of what a tattoo is worth and that might not exactly match your idea of a good or bad price.

The best advice on the price of your new tattoo sometimes just sounds like a sales pitch. The reality is that if you buy your tattoo based on price, you could end up with a shoddy or scarred tattoo - not worth the cheap price you paid. But expensive isn't always the way to go either.

You should shop for your tattoo first by looking at portfolios - an artist's resume. Look at it as hiring an artist. You wouldn't hire an employee without checking a resume or references, right?

When you find an artist you like, then talk to him or her about the design. The artist should be able to give you a ballpark price and an estimate of how long it will take. This is when you can say how much you were planning on spending and the artist can help find the design that fits your budget and makes you happy.

Don't pick something that just fits your budget - you want to be happy with your tattoo for the rest of your life. The artist you pick should want to make you as happy with the design you pick as he or she is tattooing it on your skin. Don't settle for less.

Jumping into your first tattoo isn't easy - and neither is choosing the artist to make that permanent mark.
