Can I Catch Something? The state health department has mandated all artists to use single-use needles in tattooing and piercing. Artists must also employ "universal precautions" to control the spread of disease. Under these precautions, blood of all customers is considered potentially infectious - making it important to tattoo "clean" at all times. Of course, some shops do this better than others. When looking for a tattoo shop you should definitely trust your first instincts when it comes to cleanliness. Safe work practices and cleanliness in all areas of the shop keep customers and artists worry free when it comes to blood borne diseases. Hepatitis B and C are the viruses more easily transmitted - but only transmitted due to unsafe or unclean work practices. AIDS and HIV is an anaerobic virus, which means it cannot live long in the air, so it is much harder to transmit during a tattoo or piercing procedure. Hepatitis, on the other hand, can remain active on a surface for a period of days to weeks depending upon environmental conditions. The reality is that if the shop is clean and the artists are following the regulations set up by the county and state, your risk of serious infection is low. The important thing is to choose your artist wisely - and then follow the aftercare instructions well. Your safety isn't a gamble, but it is up to you to do your homework.
